The Pump Shed Australia

The Australian-made Kelco K Series is a heavy-duty, three-wire float switch designed for accurate single-point water-level sensing in tanks, sumps and pump systems.

Its low-differential switching action changes state with approximately 35mm of water-level movement, making it suitable for high-level alarms, low-level pump protection and accurate single-point filling or emptying control.

The polypropylene float is attached to a durable rubber-clad three-core cable. Its sealed construction contains no mercury or lead and is suitable for potable water, bore water, seawater and many wastewater applications.

What the float switch does

  • Detects when water reaches or falls below its installed position
  • Provides a normally open or normally closed switching signal
  • Can signal a pump to start or stop
  • Can be wired for tank filling or tank emptying
  • Provides low-water pump protection
  • Provides high-level or low-level alarm signalling
  • Does not require a Franklin BLC probe relay

Compatible pumps and applications

The Kelco K Series can be used with Franklin MH and EVR pumps, Franklin bore pumps and other suitable pump systems when connected through a compatible control panel, relay or contactor.

Suitable applications include:

  • Rainwater and storage tanks
  • Bore-water storage systems
  • Tank filling or emptying control
  • Low-water pump protection
  • High-level and low-level alarms
  • Sumps and wastewater systems
  • Potable-water systems
  • Compatible Franklin CP1 and CP3 control panels with a suitable float-switch input

Available cable lengths

  • K4M – Kelco K Series float switch with 4-metre attached cable

Installation and selection warning

The K Series is a low-differential, single-point float switch. One switch can provide a filling or emptying signal, but it does not provide a wide separation between pump start and stop levels. Applications requiring separate high and low switching points generally require two K Series switches, suitable control equipment or a Kelco Q Series high-differential float switch.

The Franklin-supplied K Series is listed as a 10-amp resistive, 0–240-volt single-pole double-throw switch. A resistive rating must not be treated as an equivalent pump-motor rating.

Do not connect the float switch directly to a three-phase motor. Pump motors and loads exceeding the switch’s appropriate electrical rating must be operated through a correctly selected control panel, relay or contactor.

Allow at least 150mm of free cable between the float and its tethering point. Install the float at least 100mm away from tank walls, pipes and other equipment so it can move freely. Avoid turbulence, cable abrasion and prolonged direct sunlight.

The switch must not be used deeper than 30 metres, in closed vessels above 300kPa, in liquids below −20°C or above 60°C, or in liquids with a specific gravity below 0.82 without confirming suitability.

All mains-voltage wiring must be completed by a licensed electrician in accordance with the supplied Kelco instructions and applicable Australian electrical requirements.
